Hyundai Rotem has announced plans to introduce the first hydrogen-electric tram in Ulsan City, South Korea.

Solidifying its commitment, Hyundai Rotem CEO Lee Young-bae last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ulsan Mayor Song Chulho for the project.

Under the agreement, Hyundai will roll out a hydrogen-powered tram, a fuelling station and a vehicle based on a railway spanning 4.6km, connecting Taehwagang Station and Ulsanhang Station.
据协议内容,现代汽车将推出一辆氢动力有轨电车,一座加氢站以及4.6公里长的铁路,这条铁路连接着Taehwagang 站 and Ulsanhang 站。
Together, the two parties will jointly propose a demonstration project for the Ulsan port route and cooperate with each other to ensure easy deployment.

Hyundai Rotem has been developing hydrogen electric trams with Hyundai Motors since last year and plans to complete the production of a performance test platform vehicle by 2021.

The company’s hydrogen tram is manufactured in a low-floor structure, making it convenient for passengers to get on and off. Furthermore, because it doesn’t require a tram line, it improves the city’s appearance and reduces construction costs.

Commenting on the project, an official from Hyundai Rotem, said, “Through an agreement with Ulsan City, which has been selected as a hydrogen model city, we expect that the commercialisation of domestic hydrogen electric trams will accelerate further.”
